The Right Way to Wash Your Hair

Who knew? There is a right way to wash your hair, and no –– it's not lather, rinse, repeat.

Why is the right way so important? Because how you wash your hair has a tremendous impact on its health and brilliance. Most people probably take a minute or so when in reality, a 3-5 minute wash, 2-3 times a week is ideal.

Here's the skinny on the right way to wash your hair.

  • DETANGLE: Begin by brushing your hair before you get into the shower. This will detangle your hair and reduce breakage.
  • CLEANSE: Wet your hair thoroughly, and apply a quarter-sized amount of shampoo. Focus the majority of the shampoo at your scalp. After lathering, give yourself a good two-minute scalp massage (to help stimulate blood flow), lifting hair from the roots.
  • CONDITION: If you use conditioner, apply it only to the ends and let it sit for a couple of minutes. This will hydrate damaged ends, and make hair easier to manage. Never put conditioner on the scalp. Your final rinse should be with cool water to seal the cuticles.
  • MINIMIZE: Stop washing your hair every day – 2-3 times a week is ideal. You can use dry shampoo one day in-between. Or, if you’re extremely active and sweat a lot, use a 50-50 solution of apple cider vinegar to water and spray at the roots to remove oil. Unlike dry shampoo, there’s no residue, and vinegar is great for your scalp.
  • EAT WELL: Yes, our overall health and well being can show up in our hair. Our liver is linked to our scalp, so eating properly (healthy/balanced) helps to detox both your body and your hair.
  • DETOX There are a variety of detox products on the market designed to remove oil and dirt from the scalp. Regardless of which detox product you choose, the trick is to really work it into the scalp. Use a tablespoon of the product on wet hair, and more water and really scrub your scalp until your arms are tired. Repeat.

Happy washing!
